Roeding Park Resurface Complete!
 Renovation Underway

USTA Rep Marian Thomson shares pictures of the new courts with Pinky Alegarbes and Meijing Gruberg.  Much of the improvement at the facility is an offshoot of the seed Thomson planted five years ago to revive a defunct Roeding Park Tennis Club.  Renovation story below.  For photos of the re-done courts in action click here.

It has officially been decided that the delayed resurface work at Roeding Park will be done by an experienced outside company, which means that the city’s Facilities Department will put together the technical requirements. Facilities construction specialist, Andrew Vanderford, says his team is working on the project now and should be finished before the end of November (2005).

According to Mike Brown in Purchasing, when Facilities has the specs ready, the project goes back to Purchasing and they oversee the complexities of the bid process.  "For this type of formal bid, it's usually a minimum of 90 days before City Council makes the award," says Brown.

All of which means, of course, that the resurface work will be done next summer, the warmer weather being vital.  "We're not going to rush this thing," says Facilities' Vanderford, whose team will be overseeing the project, "we're going to have the work done correctly and professionally."

  Does Not Affect Resurface Project!

According to Rec Department Finance Manager, Paul Melikian, the money is 100% locked in for the resurface project.  In fact, the ball is now in the hands of Neal Epperson, Administrative Contract Manager.  Epperson is currently working with Purchasing to expedite the proposal request and get the project out to bid.

The back fence on the awning below now as a layer of fence material over it similar to the roof, which gives the bench full shade in the mornings.   (The material was hung in a temporary manner and will be spliced in properly by Charlie Burns' crews when they have more time.)  Court #4, with this unique shade structure, has been dedicated to Senior Players (over 60) on Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday mornings.

Tennis Court Remake Complete
          At Roeding Park

A year ago the tennis court adjacent to Redwood Grove was unplayable, such was its constant abuse by non-tennis picnickers. But then, in partners with the Roeding Park Tennis Club, Charlie Burns’ city crew extended the height of the court’s side fence and put a locked gate where the entrance used to be. Since then the court has remained clean and undamaged. Burns also replaced the court’s dilapidated wooden bench with an inexpensive prototype bench designed by the club. The new bench has proven successful and will be used on other courts as needed.

And now a thing of real value is perched above that bench – an awning which will allow tennis players temporary relief from the Fresno sun. The awning project was planned during the reign of McHatten/Kimber. It was designed by engineer Larry Tonel (of Public Works and RPTC.) The project was recently completed under the Milavich/Seay command.

The heavy iron brackets for the 18 foot long structure were made by Doug Rogers in the park’s equipment shop. They were hung on the fence by Cowboy Caglia and Tim Faccinto. The entire frame was welded by Robert Salcido (fleet management shop), and then painter Larry Garabedian put the finishing silvery touches on it.

In a stroke of cowboy genius, Dave Caglia came up with the idea of using slatted chain link material as a covering for the awning – it looks great and is far more indestructible than other shade fabrics! Come summer, the once dilapidated court #4, will transform from an unused piece of concrete to perhaps the most popular court at the park.
