Municipal Championships Provides Best Tennis in 15 Years!
|
The courts were filled at the Roeding Park Tennis Center all three days of Memorial Weekend. With 14 events and a free barbecue, there were plenty of spectators to witness the various levels of play. More than a few seasoned bystanders noted that the event provided “the best tennis we’ve seen out here in years.” And also “some of the best dressed ladies,” according to others. Thanks is extended to the Joe Stepanyan family for hosting the food and music. |
Stever Upsets Lucero in Semis Defaults to Brekhus in FinalPerhaps the best match of the championship event was the Ilic/Brekhus semifinal. Both men knocked the cover off the ball for three sets, with Brekhus prevailing 6-2 in the third. John Brekhus had a much easier time in the final, however, where he received a default from Bruce Stever. Brekhus then teamed with partner Brian Campbell in an electrifying doubles final against the Chilean blooded duo of Martin Ilic and Ignacio Lucero. Lucero and Ilic pulled out the tight-fisted two setter, 6-3, 7-5. In 4.5 play, a very mobile Mike Perez defended his No. 1 seeding with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over No.2 Craig Hannen. Lutes and Yang Double WinnersBen Lutes apparently didn’t like his No. 2 seeding in 4.0 singles and doubles. The fiery little lefty squeaked by Mike Tannen, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the singles final. Lutes and partner big Brian Mosdey then captured the doubles title with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Tannen and Bob Croeni. Tannen was seeded No. 1 in both events. Roeding Park veteran Sue Yang
defeated junior high phenom Carissa Lee, 6-1, 6-2 for the women’s
championship title. Yang then teamed with Tim Hernandez to battle
Lee and partner Jordan Harris in the mixed. Yang and Hernandez
closed the casket at 6-0 in the third. |
McFerson Comes Out of Nowhere Wins Closely Contested EventUnheralded Mike McFerson won the 3.5 singles without the drop of a set. However, Herman Wage, who McFerson beat in the semis, was pushed to three sets by Anthony Horan in the opening round. And on the other side of the draw, LeRoy Luokkannen, narrowly escaped Armando Parra in a three set start. Luokkannen then jumped into a grueling three set battle with Mark Garcia. The finals was somewhat of a relief for Luokkannen, where he fell to McFerson in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4. Luokkannen and partner Leo Gonzales won the doubles over Parra and Horan, 6-3, 6-4. In 3.0 play, No. 2 Seed Mark Stewart prevailed over Greg McLaren 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. McLaren had upset No. 1 Mike Purtell in a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Dave Colby and Mark Forney won the doubles with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Fritz Wilke and Jerry Corwin. Women’s Division TitlesPinky Alegarbes won the women’s 3.5 singles by defeating Eileen Fisher-Stewart and Jan Sharp in a round robin. The legendary Sharp gave up some 30 years to Alegarbes. The 3.5 doubles went to the hard-hitting team of Joyce Leyva and Sue Pisciotta, who gave Meijing Gruberg and Fisher-Stewart a 6-1, 6-3 drubbing in the finals. In 3.0 singles, Lina Hoffmann prevailed over Elena Austin, 6-2, 7-5.
